Why Visit a Dermatologist?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It makes up about 15% of your total body weight and amounts to about 22 square feet. If it gets uncomfortable or irritated, it is a big deal. Reasons for visiting a dermatologist are:

  • Acne
  • Wrinkles
  • Moles
  • Rashes
  • Psoriasis
  • Warts
  • Rosacea
  • Skin Cancer

How to Protect Your Skin?

One of the most important things you can do is to protect your skin from the sun. You need to use a sunblock of at least 30 SPF and it should be broad spectrum. If you are going to have heavy exposure, or you are very pale, higher than 30 is recommended by the AMA. Keep in mind that sunscreen wears off in about 2 hours and needs to be reapplied.

Protective clothing and a hat with a broad brim give additional protection. The color of your skin should not determine how you protect it. All colors are susceptible to the ravages of UV rays.

What Does Skin Cancer Look Like?

Skin cancer isn't just one cancer, there are three common types, and they all look somewhat different.

Basal Cell Carcinoma- This is the most common form of cancer. It appears as a pearl-like bump, a round growth that is flesh-colored, or a patch of skin pink in color.

Squamous cell carcinoma- This cancer is usually in the form of a firm red bump, a scaly patch of skin, or a sore that heals and reopens.

Melanoma- This cancer can spread, which makes it particularly serious. It can grow within a mole or as a  dark spot that appears and doesn't look like a normal freckle.

Can Wrinkles Be Treated?

With dermatology in North Logan, UT, Botox is an option for reducing the wrinkles in your face. Certain types of wrinkles respond well to Botox. If you have horizontal lines on your forehead, wrinkles around your mouth, vertical lines between your eyes, or crow's feet, these all respond well to Botox. The results will last for 3 to 6 months.
